Back in the 1950s and 1960s, America was producing some of the world’s best-sounding hi-fi gear by famous brands like Marantz, McIntosh, Fisher, Eico, Scott, Acoustic Resarch, and Altec-Lansing. Then in the 1970s, with the advent of transistors, many of the great tube amps, preamps, and speakers disappeared as they were replaced by mid-fi Japanese brands. Fortunately, since the 1990s, America’s hi-fi cottage industry has been re-emerging. McIntosh, an iconic American brand founded in 1949, continues to be made in USA at their longtime facility in Binghamton, New York.
25th ANNIVERSARY: Megadisc Classics started in 1993 when Antwerp was Cultural Capital of Europe and the owner of Megadisc Ric Urmel found to his amazement that there were no CD recordings of the composer Karel Gœyvaerts.
Around the same time he met Patrick De Clerck, who after a production of his own music on Megadisc Classics was asked to produce the recordings of the works of Galina Ustvolskaya. These recordings are the “historic” ones.
Following an already impressive catalog that includes last year’s “Primus EP”on NBGS, “High Key” is LowTempo’s first full-length album on Croma. Crunchy guitar licks, intricate solos and occasional improvisations are the order of the day, combined with hip hop beats, skillfully chopped vocals and tight synth lines to devastating effect.
We’re now exactly one week away from the release date. To make the wait a little smoother, the fatigued one was totally down to the idea of previewing a track for y’all before the album drops. So without wasting too much time, here is the opening track from “High Key”:
